Descale the kettle

The kettle is one of the most used appliances in many kitchens. You quickly have hot water on hand during cooking and when you feel like a cup of tea, the water is up to temperature within a few minutes. When you use the kettle a lot, it is important to descale it regularly. This is not difficult, you can use one of the following home-garden-and-kitchen resources for this:

The juice of one lemon (lemon in powder form also works well)
A dash of natural vinegar
A dash of descaling agent
Step 1: emptying the kettle
First of all, it is important to throw away any old water that is still in the kettle. Then fill the kettle with new water and add the cleaning agent.

Step 2: descaling!
Have you opted for cleaning with lemon? Then you don't have to do much. Let the water with the lemon juice stand for a few hours so that the lime slowly releases. When you clean the kettle with vinegar, bring the water to a boil and then let the kettle stand for another 30 minutes. When you use descaler, cooking is not necessary. The lime is dissolved after fifteen minutes.

Step 3: remove the cleaning agent
Now it is important to wash the last remnants of the cleaning mixture out of the kettle, because who wants a cup of tea that tastes like lemon, vinegar or descaling agent? By treating the inside with a sponge or washing-up brush, you can be sure that everything is completely gone.

Frequently asked questions about descaling the kettle
Why do I have limescale deposits in my kettle?
There are small lime particles in the Dutch water because there are many small shells in our soil. The water hardness differs per region, for example, there is almost twice as much lime in the water in Eemsmond as in Ermelo.

How often do I have to descale the kettle?
Does it take longer for the water to boil and do you see a lot of white deposits on the heating element? Then it's probably time to descale the kettle again. As a rule of thumb, you can continue cleaning once every twelve weeks.

Is drinking water with lime unhealthy?
No, drinking water with lime is in no way harmful to health. People with sensitive skin can benefit from soft water with little lime.
